Zoloto craftily builds the space in his recordings; his music oozes emptiness, the echo resonates, and multiple planes create an evocative narrative. Electronic passages, voice, gramophone and recorders are backed with synths in a few tracks. This ambient collage generates anxiety, leading us towards the mysterious instead of bringing peace. This is the music of silence, of memories and nostalgia – or perhaps longing for something else.
Favorite track: Salve.
"Ghosting" is Ivan Zoloto's second full lenght solo release, and it's the beginning of a trilogy he's been working on since 2016 (all three releases are scheduled to come out during 2020). The album takes in Ivan's noise roots and a penchant for primitive electronics and cassettes, but branches out into isolated dub-techno maneuvers, and has some smoky melodies to boot.
Psychogeography plays no small part here: the tracks on "Ghosting" follow Ivan's personal movements thought the last 7 years, recorded in Karelia, Russia, Denmark, China, and the U.S.A. As he recollects endless relocations, visa issues, new and old friends, and acquaintances are part of the fabric of the record. The work was finalized in Barcelona, where Ivan Zoloto seems to have settled for a longer period.
"This sad wet tape is dedicated to Noise. Noise is the sound of loud. It comes from throwing pots and pans at your husband. My mom loves it. Please enjoy my tape, Ghosting. It's about an idiot and his miserable jet set and a girl and I guess ghosts too probably. Who cares. I love war."
This is the second release on CANT label, established in Moscow by Zurkas Tepla.
